SALEM, IL — A 33-year-old Salem man has been charged with felony theft after he allegedly took more than $10,000 cash from a safe in a home he was visiting. According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Anthony Harden had visited a rural Salem home to visit someone house sitting the residence while its owners were out of town.

While at the home, Harden allegedly broke into a safe and took more than $10,000 cash. None of the money has been recovered, say authorities. Bond was set at $35,000 for a 35-year-old Salem man who was formally charged in Marion County Court on Friday with felony theft for having unauthorized control of property valued at more than $10,000. After the theft was reported, deputies began watching Harden’s home waiting for him to return. When he arrived at the home Thursday he was taken into custody on the felony theft charge.

Bond was set at $35,000 and he was released after posting 10% bail. He’s prohibited from having contact with the alleged victims or their home. A previous theft conviction in Cumberland County makes Harden eligible for extended-term sentencing if he’s found guilty in the Marion County case.
