MARION COUNTY, IL — A 25-year-old Mt. Vernon man arrested over the weekend in connection with a September 2021 shooting incident in Centralia was formally arraigned Monday morning in Marion County Court. Mack Herron was charged in court with two Class X felonies for aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm and Class 1 aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle.

The $500,000 warrant was issued in October – approximately one month after the September 2021shooting near the intersection of Lincoln and Howard. Dalshaun Mitchell, of Centralia told police he was walking northbound on Lincoln Street and crossing the parking lot of the Marion County Housing Authority when shots were fired from a passing blue Chrysler 200. Police report a total of eight shots were fired in the incident with two shots striking Mitchell who was first taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia before being transferred to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment. Mitchell reportedly told police he didn’t know who shot him or why; however, video surveillance from the Marion County Housing Authority helped police identify the vehicle and ultimately led to Herron as a suspect.

Herron is next due to appear in court March 2 for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with his private attorney.
