Crash on route 37 near West Frankfort kills two Wednesday morning

WEST FRANKFORT, IL — Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle accident in West Frankfort Wednesday morning.

According to Illinois State Police, around 10:45 a.m. a 37-year-old Carbondale man was driving a gray Hyundai Elantra north on Illinois 37 near Country Club Road and slowed to turn left. A truck driven by an 18-year-old man was traveling north at the same location. An SUV driven by 64-year-old Theresa Winters of West Frankfort and a black Jeep Renegade driven by 64-year-old Wyonna Murphy of West Frankfort were both traveling south at the same location.

The truck driver failed to slow down and struck the rear of the Carbondale man’s car. His car was forced into the path of Winters’ SUV and the truck continued into the path of Murphy’s vehicle. The truck driver and Murphy reported no injuries. The Carbondale man and his passenger, a 28-year-old woman from West Frankfort, were pronounced dead on scene. Their names are being withheld until family members are notified.

Winters and her passenger, 62-year-old Lynette Duck of Brentwood, CA were taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An unidentified woman in the Carbondale man’s car was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Illinois 37 was shut down in both directions for four hours and the ISP says the crash is still under investigation. No further information is available at this time.

The truck driver was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
