(Carbondale, IL) — Kids are skipping school in droves in southern Illinois. Officials in Jackson and Perry counties say they’ve had to add two truancy officers to their payroll this year. That’s because the number of truant-student referrals jumped from 180 in 2013 to more than 300-this year. Students are considered truant if they miss at least seven days of school.
