(FAIRFIELD, IL) — The body of a 55-year-old Wayne County man missing since last week was found Wednesday night in a drainage ditch near Golden Gate. Thomas Sharp was last seen leaving his home on an ATV last Thursday night. Fairfield Rural Fire Department volunteers searching for Sharp along a drainage ditch near Golden Gate spotted his body shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday. Coroner reports indicate his body was found just north of where firemen found his four-wheeler in the backwater last Saturday morning. Wayne County Coroner Jimmy Taylor says it appears Sharp’s 4-wheeler got stranded in the back waters and he was trying to walk towards town when he stepped into a deep drainage ditch. Firefighters had used boats, an airplane, divers and sonar over the past several days in their search for Sharp, but failed to locate his body until floodwaters receded on Wednesday. Taylor says no foul play is suspected in Sharp’s death. However, an autopsy is slated for Thursday.
