FAYETTE COUNTY — The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is alerting people to an online scam claiming to sell heavy equipment out of Beecher City.

According to the sheriff’s office, the website smttrekcentral.com claims to sell various equipment. However, the sheriff’s office claims the page is a scam and urges people to not send any money to this company.

ScamAdvisor says smttrekcentral.com has a very low trust score indicating a likely scam site.

The page lists dozens of pieces of heavy equipment for sale in a number of categories including backhoes, skid steers, and bulldozers. Prices on these items are much, much lower than market prices for the same equipment. For example, a 2016 John Deere backhoe is listed on SMT Trek Central for less than $15,000, which is tens of thousands cheaper than market prices for the same vehicle.

ScamAdvisor warns that while the SMT website does have a valid certificate and DNS Filter lists the site as safe, the owner of the website is using a service to hide their identity on WHOIS and the website appears to be hosted by a company with a bad reputation.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office flat out says you should not send your money to this company and that they’re working to get the website removed.
