JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL — A two-vehicle crash on Route 37 Sunday night sent a mother and her small son to the hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered when their disabled vehicle was struck.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, around 9:43 p.m., a car driven by 30-year-old Samatha Thomas of Ina had run out of gas on Route 37 south of Bakersville Road. However, due to a lack of a shoulder on that area of roadway and a steep drop off, Thomas was unable push the car out of the way of traffic. She instead stayed in the car with her five-year-old son with the hazard flashers on. Her car was ultimately hit in the rear by a 16-year-old male juvenile from Benton after he had just completed passing another vehicle. The juvenile was not injured but was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Thomas and her son had to be extricated from the car. Both were taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon for treatment of apparent minor injuries.
