MARION COUNTY, IL — A SnapChat message led to the arrest of a 31-year-old Odin man suspected of leaving the scene of a crash Sunday that left Ross Road and Green Street Road closed for several hours Sunday morning.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Eric Gaul, of rural Odin, is accused of striking a power pole on Ross Road around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. The crash caused the pole to fall and block Ross Road, while the power lines fell across Green Street Road. Gaul is accused of then fleeing the scene. Both roads remained closed while crews with Tri-County Electric made repairs. Deputies believe Gaul lost control of his Jeep after striking a deer and then struck the power pole.

Another person saved a SnapChat message and then turned it over to a deputy, which led to Gaul’s identity.
