CARMI, IL — A Carmi man was sentenced in White County Monday to the Illinois Department of Corrections for Residential Burglary and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.

According to White County State’s Attorney Denton Aud, 24-year-old Michial L. Thomas will spend six years in IDOC on the Residential Burglary charge – a Class 1 felony. He will also serve two years of mandatory supervised release and pay costs and restitution.

Thomas will also spend four years in IDOC with one year of mandatory supervised release for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender – a Class 3 felony. He will also pay costs.

Aud says Thomas was previously on probation for the Failure to Register offense from a 2018 case. However, his probation had been revoked with a new sentencing hearing set. Thomas failed to appear for his sentencing hearing and was ultimately apprehended on a failure to appear warrant following a residential burglary that he committed in March of this year.

Aud says the sentences in the cases will run consecutive to one another so that he will have to complete one before he starts serving the other sentence; in essence, he was sentenced to 10 years in IDOC.

The Carmi Police Department was the investigating agency in both cases.
