ILLINOIS (RFD) — Be aware of what you’re swimming in this summer. If you’re going to take a dip in a lake, pond or river you should check for blue green algae. IEPA Biologist Teri Holland says you don’t want to come into contact with it because the toxins it produces can make people and pets sick.

Algae exposure might give you a rash or diarrhea or cause you to vomit. If you do come into contact with it experts suggest washing off as soon as you can with clean water.
