(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon man is in the Jefferson County jail, arrested in connection with an early morning shooting Sunday that sent another man to the hospital. According to police reports, just after 2 a.m. Sunday, they received a report of a male subject, who had been shot and was being transported by private vehicle to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Reports further indicate the subject had been shot while in a parking lot in the area of Salem Road and George Street in Mt. Vernon. Patrol officers were able to make contact with the victim and called Mt. Vernon Police detectives and a Mt. Vernon Police Department Crime Scene Technician to assist with the investigation. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office secured the victims vehicle for evidentiary processing. During the investigation, detectives identified Ashton D. Trotter as the offender. Patrol officers and detectives responded to Trotter’s residence, in the 800 block of Apricot, in Mt Vernon. Jefferson County State’s Attorney Doug Hoffman assisted detectives in applying for a search warrant for the residence, which was granted by the Honorable Judge Jo Beth Weber. Upon receiving the search warrant, officers entered the residence where Trotter surrendered to the Mt. Vernon Police K9 unit just before 11 a.m. Sunday. Trotter has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. In October, Trotter was convicted in Jefferson County court of Class 1 felony residential burglary for charges filed against him in June 2013. Two other burglary charges were dismissed per a plea agreement.
