MT. VERNON — An early Sunday morning accident is to blame for a power outage near downtown Mt. Vernon.
At approximately 4:15 a.m. Michael Doggan was traveling southbound on 12th Street at an apparent high rate of speed when his Dodge Challenger collided with a power pole and power box at the corner of 12th and Main.
The collision knocked out power to the nearby area and forced the closure of Main Street from 11th to 12th Streets and 14th Street between Main and Broadway until Ameren crews could finish repairs. The vehicle remained in the northbound lane of South 12th Street until Ameren crews could disconnect the live electrical wire that was near the vehicle.
Doggan’s condition is not known, but he was arrested by Mt. Vernon Police for driving under the influence.
