(SALEM, IL) — The Salem Police Department has released their 2016 crime statistics, which show an increase of 760 calls from 2015. Aggravated assaults remained steady, while incidents of aggravated battery doubled from the previous year from 7 to 14. There were no aggravated sex crimes reported in 2016 in Salem, but in 2015 there were three incidents each of aggravated sexual abuse and aggravated sexual assault. Sexual abuse incidents went from 3 in 2015 to 4 in 2016, and sexual assault dropped from 10 to 1. Disorderly conduct and domestic battery almost were cut in half, dropping from 249 to 175 and from 50 to 25 respectively. There were fewer incidents of driving under the influence in 2016, with only 25 incidents reported compared to 43 in 2015. Burglary and burglaries from vehicles remained steady but criminal damage to property dropped from 132 incidents to 93. Residential burglary dropped from 31 reported incidents in 2015 to 20 in 2016, and retail theft jumped from 66 incidents to 99. Traffic crashes remained steady, and felony theft dropped from nearly 40 to less than 20. Misdemeanor theft saw a slight increase from 118 to 159, while unlawful use of a weapon incidents doubled from 3 to 6.
