(SALEM, IL) — The investigation into Friday night’s double shooting has also resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old Mt. Vernon man for alleged possession of a stolen and loaded weapon. Roderick Oats was in one of two vehicles stopped in the Denny’s parking lot after leaving the party Friday night where Jacob Hayes and Jacob Joyner were shot. Reports say that as the five people in the two vehicles were being searched, Oats admitted to having a gun in his pants pocket. The .38 caliber weapon was reportedly loaded with four bullets and the hammer cocked. Oats admitted having the .38 special when asked if he had anything that could harm the officer. The deputy then found the gun in Oats pants pocket loaded with four bullets and the hammer of the weapon cocked. Deputies initially arrested Oats for alleged unlawful use of a weapon but further investigation revealed that in 1982 the gun had been stolen in Massachusetts. That resulted in an additional charge against Oats of possessing a stolen firearm. He was taken to the Marion County Jail while the others were released without charge.
