(VANDALIA, IL) — A 51-year-old Vandalia man charged with multiple meth-related offenses in two separate Fayette County cases failed to appear in court Tuesday, reportedly because he is in the hospital. The prosecution in the cases against Hardie T. Shafer requested proof of the defendant’s hospitalization. The jury trial in the case, however, remains set for January 23. Shafer is facing charges of Class 3 felony possession of less than 5-grams of methamphetamine, Class 3 felony violation of bail bond on a Class 2 felony offense, and misdemeanor violation of bail bond on a Class 4 felony offense. Those charges came after Shafer was free on bond for charges of Class 2 felony delivery of less than 5 grams of methamphetamine, Class 3 felony possession of meth, three counts Class 3 felony possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The county has taken steps to confiscate a truck and cash taken from Shafer during his initial arrest over the summer.
