(MARION, IL) — A Murphysboro couple is in the Williamson County Jail following a failed traffic stop in Energy early Thursday morning that led to a pursuit through rural Williamson and Jackson counties. According to a press release from Energy Police, just after 12:30 a.m., the police department’s Drug Interdiction Unit attempted a traffic stop on a suspect vehicle near the intersection of Illinois 13 at Briggs Road. The vehicle fled the scene and the pursuit began. Police were able to use stop sticks to stop the vehicle near the intersection of Giant City Road and No Name Road. The vehicle continued to flee despite losing both front tires. Officers were able to perform a pursuit immobilization technique to eventually stop the suspect vehicle and the intersection of South County Line Road and Court Road in rural Jackson County. Officers arrested the driver – 36-year-old Genie M. Marion – and the passenger -30-year-old Michael L. Chappell. Chappell, who was wanted and considered armed and dangerous, was booked into the Williamson County Jail on an active arrest warrant originating with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He had several other arrest warrants which were out of geographical limitations. Marion was also booked into the Williamson County Jail on a variety of charges including aggravated fleeing and eluding police, excessive speeding – 111 mph in a 55 mph zone – and driving while license suspended. Marion also had an active arrest warrant originating with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for driving on a suspended license. Police say charges are pending for a variety of drugs and drug paraphernalia which were found in the vehicle.
