JEFFERSON COUNTY — A former Jefferson County school administrator has pleaded not guilty to charges filed against her last month alleging she embezzled more than $100,000 from Webber Township School District.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office charged 55-year-old Sabrina Wheatley last month with Class X felony theft of more than $100,000 from a school, Class 3 felony official misconduct, and two counts Class 4 felony income tax fraud.
Wheatley, who had moved to Florida, was arrested November 20, and later extradited back to Illinois. Her bail had initially been set at $250,000 but was subsequently reduced to $150,000 and Wheatley was released after posting $15,000 bond.
She made her first appearance Friday on the charges in Jefferson County Court and is next due in court for a status hearing on March 1, 2017.
The investigation was conducted by the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Revenue’s (IDOR) Criminal Investigations Division and determined that on two or more occasions, Wheatley illegally accessed the school district’s account to steal money.
If convicted, Wheatley faces six to 30 years in prison and the loss of her pension.
