(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 24-year-old Mt. Vernon man is due in court today for a status hearing on a 2011 first-degree murder case against him. Mark Taylor Jr., is one of four men who were charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Charles Ellis in his cab on May 31, 2011, during an armed robbery near the intersection of Sixth and Bell streets. The three others charged in with Ellis’ murder are Demandre Black, Christopher Wells, and Damondros James. A jury trial has not yet been scheduled for Taylor, who remains in the Jefferson County jail with bail set at $3 million. The 24-year-old Taylor has been held since he was 18. Black was sentenced in October 2015 to 20 years in prison after pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a firearm. Wells, a juvenile at the time of the shooting, has gone through the judicial process. He has been charged as an adult, entered an open plea of guilty James has also entered an open plea of guilty to first degree murder for his involvement in Ellis’ death. James faces a sentence of between 20 and 60 years in prison and must serve 100 percent of his sentence. He is scheduled for a January 6 status hearing in his case.
