(BENTON, IL) — Work is about to get underway to establish a K-9 unit at the Benton Police Department. During Monday night’s City Council meeting at Benton City Hall, Public Health and Safety Commission Don Storey announced that he and Police Chief Kyle Melvin are going to start asking for the public’s help in this endeavor so the city won’t have to spend any money to make it happen. Storey says the police department will raise the money for the K-9 unit with various fundraisers. If the $30,000 amount is not all raised at one time, Storey says it will be put back by the police department until the total is reached. The council voted unanimously for Storey’s proposal.
