(WEST FRANKFORT, IL) — Despite the state’s budget mess and the effect it’s having on education in Illinois, the Frankfort Community Unit School Board this week decided to keep its summer school program for junior and high school students needing to catch up on their credits. Superintendent Greg Goins told the Southern Illinoisan that the board had to do what’s best for the kids, and the district has a lot of kids that need extra instruction. Students, who are enrolled in the program, are recommended by principals who identify students in need of the extra work.  Breakfast will be provided to students under the federal lunch program, which Goins says the district will be reimbursed. The district will also have additional costs that will include teacher and staff salaries, but it’s not known at this time how much the costs will be.
