MASSAC COUNTY — The in-custody death Wednesday of a Southern Illinois jail inmate is under investigation.

According to Illinois State Police, at approximately 9:14 a.m., Wednesday, correctional staff at the Massac County Jail found 43-year-old Dennis F. Schapmire of Ozark, IL deceased in his jail cell.

The Massac County Sheriff’s Department requested ISP conduct the investigation, and an autopsy was performed at the Williamson County Morgue. The cause of death is pending toxicology results.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is being released at this time.
