(MT. VERNON, IL) — Two men are in the Jefferson County Jail, after being arrested in connection with multiple gunshots being fired in Mt. Vernon, and assaulting law enforcement amid a melee involving more than 100 people. Just before 1:30 Saturday morning, a Mt. Vernon police officer reported hearing gunshots. Calls then came in to 911, reporting additional shots being fired in the 600 block of Herbert. As officers arrived on the scene, they reported hearing even more shots fired, and observed 21-year-old Tyrane Jackson reportedly in possession of a handgun. Officers ordered Jackson to drop the weapon. He fled, but was apprehended after a brief foot chase. As officers to clear the crowd of at least 150 people, several fights broke out. One subject, 35-year-old Alvin Gray, refused to follow officer’s commands and reportedly began fighting with the officers. While fighting with the officers, Gray battered them causing minor injury to one officer. The injury did not require medical attention. Officers were ultimately able to secure the area, and detectives and a crime scene technician subsequently responded to interview people and process evidence. Jackson is charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Justice. Gray is charged with Aggravated Battery to a Police Officer and Obstructing an Officer. Both are being held in the Jefferson County Justice Center awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
