MT. VERNON, IL — A 31-year-old Mt. Vernon man is in the Jefferson County Jail following his arrest stemming from an early Saturday morning burglary.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the 1200 block of N. 13th Street in Mt. Vernon to a report of a burglary in progress inside a residence. The subject reportedly fled the scene. After receiving a tip from a helpful citizen, officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department who were assisting the investigation, located the suspect identified as Zachery L. Stumbaugh.

Upon completing the initial investigation at the scene, sheriff’s deputies took Stumbaugh into custody and transported him to the Jefferson County Jail for alleged residential burglary. He was formally charged Monday morning in Jefferson County Court with Class 1 felony residential burglary.

Stumbaugh is next scheduled to appear in court on the case November 30 for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with his court appointed attorney.
