MT. VERNON, IL — A jury trial date was confirmed in Jefferson County Court Tuesday for a 31-year-old Mt. Vernon man accused of murdering his father last year. Traviel C. Gibson has been found mentally fit to stand trial on the three counts first degree murder and one count Class 2 felony robbery.
According to Mt. Vernon Police, on the afternoon of May 13th, 2020, a distraught woman entered the police department lobby and reported a man had been shot at a home in the 1800 block of Cherry. She also said another man at the residence had attacked her and stolen her phone. Officers reported that as they arrived at the home they witnessed Gibson run inside where they observed a deceased man on the front porch. Despite several commands from officers, Gibson refused to cooperate and exit the residence. Law enforcement ultimately made contact with Gibson, who reportedly continued to resist resulting in one officer suffering minor injuries when taking him into custody.
Jury selection in the case is scheduled for Monday morning
