A Paducah man is facing a DUI and other drug-related charges after he was allegedly involved in a hit and run traffic crash involving a vehicle which collided with a light pole near the intersection of West Grand Avenue and South Illinois Avenue in Carbondale early Saturday morning.

According to Carbondale Police, witnesses followed the vehicle as it continued to drive north on South Illinois Avenue and saw it collide with an unoccupied car parked in the 700 block of South Illinois Avenue. Officers were able to stop the vehicle at the intersection of West Cherry Street and South Illinois Avenue. The driver was identified as 31-year-old Wesley Overstreet.

Overstreet was found to be impaired and was arrested for driving under the influence. Subsequent to Overstreet’s arrest, officers found him to be in possession of scheduled narcotics without a prescription and other controlled substances. Overstreet was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance, DUI and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Overstreet suffered minor injuries as a result of one or both of the crashes.

According to multiple reports, Overstreet is the boy’s basketball coach at St. Mary’s in Paducah. The team recently played in the Paul Bates Memorial Carbondale Holiday Tournament. The school’s assistant boy’s basketball coach has been named interim coach while it investigates the matter with Overstreet.

Overstreet is set to appear for his preliminary hearing in Jackson County Court Jan. 21.
