Officials are confirming one person was killed and several more were injured in a six-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 70 in Fayette County.

The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. near mile marker 64 causing westbound lanes of the interstate to be closed and traffic to be detoured until almost midnight.

According to Illinois State Police, a semi-truck driven by 42-year-old Robert A. Todoran, of Louisiana was traveling west on Interstate 70 where traffic was stopped due to road construction.

Todoran failed to reduce speed and struck a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Jon P. Wingo of Springfield, causing a chain reaction involving a total of six vehicles.

State Police say Torodan’s vehicle left the roadway and traveled down an embankment, where the trailer became engulfed in flames.

Todoran became trapped in his vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.

Wingo was injured, as were his two passengers, 51-year-old Rachael M. Wingo, and a 14-year-old female juvenile, both of Brownstown.

Four other vehicles were involved in the crash but there were no other reported injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

Shortly after that crash, ISP reported another crash on the eastbound side of the interstate.

Crash reports say a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Kathleen Roach Burford, of Brownstown, was traveling eastbound at mile marker 64 directly behind a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Amber Wenthe, of Watson.

As Wenthe began to slow, Burford failed to reduce speed and rear ended Wenthe’s vehicle.  The impact caused Burford’s vehicle off the roadway to the right and down the grassy ditch embankment.

Wenthe’s vehicle went off the roadway to the left into the grassy center median.

Burford was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.  Both Burford and Wenthe were transported to Fayette County Hospital for treatment.

Eastbound traffic was quickly cleared, but westbound traffic remained backed up from the first crash for several hours. The left lane of westbound traffic reopened around 10 p.m., and the right lane reopened just before midnight.
