West Frankfort will be holding onto four lots that had been donated to the Morthland College Foundation. That decision was made by the city council during Tuesday night’s meeting.

The city owns the lots and decided to keep them after the city council voted last February to support the college by donating the land, but no further action was taken following that meeting. That’s according to WSIL-TV. The college has also been in trouble with the IRS regarding financial matters.

No official action was needed by the council on this matter. The city took a second look at the donation after learning about some problems and other concerns like poor maintenance of the lots.

City leaders say the college can still use the lots and arrangements can be made if it wants to use them.

City Clerk Angie Baker Deaton tells WMIX’s sister station, WQRL, the Foundation was going to place greenhouses on the lots and grow food for one of its cafes. The Foundation did use the land last year, but did not install greenhouses and the cafes have since closed.
