A 76-year-old Shobonier woman who was killed in a Friday morning house fire has been identified following an autopsy.

According to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, Ruby Darlene Mays died in the fire at her home and that she was the only person in the home at the time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office but at this time it appears to be the result of smoking. Mays’ body was severely burned in the fire so her identity was withheld pending the confirmation from a Saturday autopsy.

According to authorities, heavy flames pushed back EMS and a Fayette County Sheriff’s deputy who first attempted to enter the home.

Vandalia firefighters responded to the home on East 920 Avenue just before 10 a.m. Friday.

Upon their arrival, they reportedly found the structure fully involved with heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure.

Patoka and St. Peter firefighters responded with mutual aid for both water trucks and manpower to help fight the blaze.
