A two-vehicle crash happened around 5:50 Thursday evening on I-57 in Benton.

According to Illinois State Police, 31-year-old Brandii R. Turner of New London, Missouri, was driving her pickup truck pulling a horse trailer on southbound I-57 at milepost 72 when the driver’s side rear tire detached from the truck causing it to jackknife and leave the roadway to west. The trailer over-corrected causing five horses to be ejected.

A semi, driven by 56-year-old Mark Anthony Blackwood of Vinemont, Alabama, was going south in the passing lane and struck one of the horses causing significant damage to the semi and killing the horse.

Both northbound and southbound sides of I-57 were shut down for 45 minutes so the four remaining horses could be removed by a Franklin County resident with a horse trailer. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Turner was taken to Franklin Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Blackwood was not hurt.

Turner was charged with use of unsafe equipment.
