(HARRISBURG, IL) — Last night’s storms were an eerie reminder of how quickly storms can impact a community even when prepared. It has now been five years since the unseasonable weather caused an EF4 tornado to hit Harrisburg in the early morning hours of February 29, 2012. That tornado heavily damaged or destroyed over 200 homes and 25 businesses including that town’s medical center, before moving into Gallatin County and damaging another 140 homes and businesses in Ridgway. In all, 8 fatalities and approximately 108 injuries were reported in the storm that started just north of Carrier Mills and ended northeast of Ridgway.  That storm spent 22 minutes on the ground, had a path length of 26.5 miles with a peak wind speed of 180 miles per hour according to the National Weather Service.
