(Edwardsville, IL) — Prosecutors in Madison County are seeking to have a defendant declared sexually dangerous. The move would allow the state attorney’s office the possibility of seeking a life sentence. State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons says trial is underway against James Lopes, who has been in custody since making comments online about sex with children as a religious ritual and looking to have sex with minors. Gibbons says if Lopes is declared sexually dangerous it would allow his office to have him committed indefinitely, possibly even for life.
