MT. VERNON – Mt. Vernon Fire and the Illinois State Fire Marshal are investigating a deadly Sunday night house fire in Mt. Vernon.

According to the fire department, firefighters got a call about the blaze in the 900 block of Pace Avenue around 8:30 p.m. and responded. When they arrived the front of the house and the porch was on fire.

A search team entered the home and found a man. The coroner responded and declared him dead. The victim’s name has not been released.

The home suffered smoke and fire damage. The roof also collapsed with a lot of fire damage done to the attic.
