MT. VERNON – Deaconess Illinois Crossroads Auxiliary is proud to announce a major milestone: they have reached 100 active volunteers, marking a remarkable achievement just before the new year.
This accomplishment comes at a time when volunteerism, especially in healthcare, has seen a significant decline following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rebuilding a strong volunteer presence in a healthcare setting requires dedication, strategy and leadership. Under the direction of Auxiliary President Carolyn Marks, the Deaconess Illinois Crossroads Auxiliary has not only restored momentum but exceeded expectations. Reaching more than 100 volunteers demonstrates the community’s renewed commitment to service and reinforces the hospital’s mission to provide compassionate, people-centered care.
“This milestone reflects the heart of our community and the passion of individuals who want to make a difference,” Marks said. “Our volunteers support patients, families, staff and one another—strengthening the culture of care that defines Deaconess Illinois.”
This growth has already expanded the Auxiliary’s impact:
• The Auxiliary increased its scholarship offerings for local students from four to six, awarding $1,000 per student to support future healthcare professionals.
• A strong, ongoing relationship with Mt. Vernon Township High School’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) program.
• Volunteers are enhancing support services in the newly established Oncology/Hematology unit at DIL Crossroads, providing comfort items, patient engagement and coordinated community resources.
As Deaconess Illinois Crossroads prepares for the year ahead, the growing volunteer team will remain a vital part of its patient-centered mission.
“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization,” said Stephanie Mings, Regional Community Relations Manager. “Reaching this milestone is more than a number—it represents countless acts of kindness, support and service that strengthen our hospital and our community.”
