MT. VERNON, IL — Charges have been dropped against one person, but another suspect has been arrested in connection with the early Sunday mass shooting in Mt. Vernon that killed two people and wounded five others. On Wednesday, police announced they had charged 26-year-old Jamaro J. Kemmerling of Mt. Vernon with two gun-related counts. Police believe there were multiple shooters and they are still actively seeking suspects and more information from the public.

Mt. Vernon Police initially charged Jerria Smith with two counts, including obstruction of justice. Court records show the state’s attorney asked on Monday that a judge dismiss that case. Smith reportedly was one of the 5 people hurt in the shooting.

20-year-old Zomarrius Williams and 26-year-old Demonta Woodward died in the shooting that happened during a party where more than 100 people were gathered in the 600 block of South 15th Street.
