EFFINGHAM COUNTY — A 37-year-old Flora man will remain in the Effingham County Jail on charges of attempted kidnapping and battery of a person over the age of 60.

Matthew Kelledes was arrested in January in the lobby of an Effingham hotel. He’s accused of attempting to take a girl under the age of 13 from the hotel. He reportedly was then involved in a physical altercation with hotel staff and patrons before police arrived. The child was unharmed.

Kelledes was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on charges of Class 1 attempted aggravated kidnapping as well as Class 2 felony aggravated battery of a person over the age of 60 and Class 3 felony attempting to disarm a peace officer.

However, due to his reported disruptive behavior at the jail, his preliminary hearing was first held via Zoom, and then rescheduled for February 14.

Kelledes will remain in custody as he is on a parole hold for the Illinois Department of Corrections on convictions out of Clay County for meth possession and violation of a protective order.
