FRANKLIN COUNTY — Travel in the area was complicated Friday morning starting with a fatal two-vehicle crash around 5:30 a.m. in Franklin County.

According to Illinois State Police, at approximately 5:23 a.m. near the 76.5 milepost of southbound Interstate 57 in Franklin County near the Jefferson County line, the driver of the first vehicle was traveling northbound when it went off the roadway and into the center median.

The vehicle then went into the southbound lanes and struck the second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passengers of the first vehicle and a passenger in the second vehicle were transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.

Interstate 57 was closed in that area until almost 10 a.m.
