SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Expect to see more police out on the roads Wednesday for Speed Awareness Day.

The day is part of a multi-state effort to highlight the dangers of driving too fast. Illinois State Police Trooper Melissa Albert-Lopez says they are increasing patrols for the occasion.

Albert-Lopez says speeding can lead to losing control of the car and decreases the stopping distance to the vehicle in front of you.

It also raises the extent of injuries and the risk of death when a crash occurs.
