MARION COUNTY — Marion County authorities are confirming the first Xylazine drug death in the community.

According to the Marion County Coroner and Sheriff’s offices, Xylazine is often mixed with other drugs such as fentanyl or heroin.

Xylazine is a strong animal tranquilizer that is not approved for use on humans, says the CDC. They say it’s often mixed with other drugs to either enhance their effects or to increase their weight for street value.

When Xylazine, also called “tranq” or “tranq dope” enters the human body, symptoms can include difficulty breathing, dangerously low blood pressure and slowed heart rate.

Wounds suffered and skin ulcerations can become infected and lead to rotting skin and limb amputations, which also leads to the drug being called the “zombie drug.”

Xylazine does not respond to naloxone or Narcan. However, if an overdose is suspected it should still be administered to counter any other drugs in the system.
