WAYNE COUNTY, IL — A Cobden man was injured in a crash involving himself and a semi on I-64 in Wayne County Tuesday morning.

According to Illinois State Police, a semi with a flatbed trailer driven by 39-year-old Christopher D. Smith of Douglas, KS, was driving east on I-64 at milepost 106 approaching a single lane bridge construction. Smith was hauling an oversized load on the trailer which was within the width requirement for the single lane.

Smith crossed over the right fog lane and the passenger side trailer tires and fenders struck the adjacent guardrail to the right causing the guardrail to become airborne. The guardrail landed on the other side of the construction concrete barrier and struck a construction worker – 25-year-old Guillermo Palmerin of Cobden – in the lower right leg.

Palmerin was taken in a company vehicle to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Smith refused medical attention.

ISP says no further information will be released.

Smith was cited for Improper Lane Use and No Proper Evidence of Registration.
