MT. VERNON, IL — A home and nearby vacant mobile home east of Mt. Vernon were both destroyed in a fire Friday afternoon.

According to the Jefferson Fire Protection District, both structures were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene in the 16-hundred block of Old Fairfield Road.

A female occupant wasn’t home around 12:30 Friday afternoon when the fire was discovered.

The home and its contents were completely destroyed.

Bluford firefightters provided mutual aid and brought additional water to the scene.

Firefighters were on the scene for approximately three hours. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
