BENTON, IL – Franklin County dedicated its new courthouse facility on the Square in Benton Friday morning.
Jim Muir, the Circuit Clerk in Franklin County, says it’s been a little over three years since voters approved a referendum for a one percent sales tax to fund building the new facility that replaces the 1875 courthouse that was plagued with so many problems, the only solution was to replace it. From start to finish, it took 620 days to build the new courthouse.
Muir says the actual cost of the facility is about $13 million and money was also spent to renovate the bottom level of the Campbell Building to house the courts and the Circuit Clerk’s office until the courthouse was finished making the cost around $18 million.
The Circuit Clerk’s office will start moving back from its temporary home in the Campbell Building starting Monday with Court beginning soon afterwards. Other county offices that once called the courthouse home will remain in the Campbell Building on the Square.
