MT. VERNON, IL — A rural Mt. Vernon home and its attached garage were heavily damaged in a Tuesday fire.

According to the Jefferson Fire Protection District, flames were showing from the garage of the home when they arrived around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at 12549 Sparrow Lane near RP Lumber. Flames had spread into the attic from the garage and firefighters had to cut holes in the roof to reach the fire and keep it contained to the attic area. The rest of the garage and home suffered heat and smoke damage. The Red Cross was called to assist the residents of the home.

No one was in the home and firefighters were able to rescue three dogs and a cat, while another cat died in the fire. The State Fire Marshal’s office was called to investigate the cause of the fire, but no determination has been made on the cause.
