CENTRALIA, IL — Bond has been set at $500,000 for a 25-year-old Mt. Vernon man arrested over the weekend in connection with a September 2021 shooting incident in Centralia. Mack Herron was in the Jefferson County Jail on another case when he released to the Marion County Jail on an outstanding warrant for a charge of aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm.

According to Centralia police, Herron is accused of firing shots from a blue Chrysler 200 near the intersection of Lincoln and Howard, before fleeing the scene. Dalshaun Mitchell, of Centralia told police he was walking northbound on Lincoln Street and crossing the parking lot of the Marion County Housing Authority when shots were fired from a passing car. Police report a total of eight shots were fired in the incident with two shots striking Mitchell who was first taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hosptial in Centralia before being transferred to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment.

Mitchell reportedly told police he didn’t know who shot him or why; however, video surveillance from the Marion County Housing Authority and a cooperating witness helped police identify the vehicle and ultimately led to Herron as a suspect.
