BENTON, IL — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Protect K9 Heroes for their donation of a K-9 Ballistic Vest and a Canine Trauma Kit, which includes Narcan, for Franklin County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Riot. The ballistic vest and trauma kit will help protect K-9 Riot in dangerous situations that he may encounter while on duty.

Protect K9 Heroes is a non-profit organization that assist agencies to facilitate through charitable donations an additional funding resource to reach a goal of 100% opportunity for ballistic protection for K-9s and reducing K-9 line of duty deaths to 0% annually. In recognizing the budgetary constraints of agencies, Protecting K9 Heroes works to supplement the ability to properly protect the valuable assets that are the working K-9s throughout the United States. Protecting K9 Heroes will provide Ballistic Vests, Medical Kits, NARCAN and any other protective gear to as many working K-9s as possible.

K-9 Riot is a 1 1/2 year old Belgian Malinois that is a dual purpose police K-9, that was purchased from Von Liche Kennels in Indiana. K-9 Riot and his handler, Deputy Ryan Payne, completed a 6 week training course at Von Liche and they began patrol in December of 2021. Recently, K-9 Riot and Deputy Payne successfully completed drug detection and are now certified in the State of Illinois. K-9 Riot is trained in Drug Detection, Tracking, and Apprehension.
