United Way & Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce award over $3,000 in grants to area teachers

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL — The Education Council of the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce recently awarded eight grants totalling just over $3,000 to teachers throughout the county.

Executive Director of the Chamber, Jamie Storey says through the efforts of Council members, and thanks in large part to a $2,659 donation from the United Way of South Central Illinois, this marks the third consecutive year the Chamber has been able to award every eligible grant application received.

Shane Gordon is the Vice President of the Education Council at the Chamber. He says teachers are more deserving than ever, so it was wonderful to be able to provide much needed supplemental materials for teachers and students.

The grant money will be used to fund a wide variety of equipment that will benefit students including social-emotional curriculum, band equipment, books, art supplies, mental health equipment, and flexible furniture.

Nat Wellen, Executive Director of the United Way of South Central Illinois commented, “Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.  The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce teacher grants is a program that United Way of South Central Illinois has chosen to support the last two years.  We are so proud to be able to make a difference not only for the teachers but also for the current students and future students.  I applaud all of this year’s recipients, your passion inspires us all and we look forward to supporting this program in the years to come.

Grants were awarded to Mount Vernon Township High School, ROE 13 Alternative School, Rome Grade School, St. Mary’s Grade School, Waltonville Grade School, and Woodlawn High School. The teachers receiving awards included Keli Tate, Rebecca Simpson, Michelle Luzton-Jee, Sara Wiggins, David Mateyka, Crystal Drenner, Raymond Clodi Jr, and Niki Wiśniewski.
