Farina man sentenced to 30 yrs for child sex crimes

FAYETTE COUNTY, IL — A 41-year-old Farina man was sentenced Monday in Fayette County Court to 30 years in prison after a jury found him guilty in November on all five counts charging him with child sex crimes. Robert Branham argued a number of factors in court Monday including one that claimed a “reasonable jury” would not have found him guilty based upon the evidence presented at trial.

The jury in November deliberated less than two hours before returning their verdict of guilty on all charges. Branham’s attorney had filed a motion last month to withdraw from the case but Judge Marc Kelly denied that motion Monday and sentencing moved forward. Despite his arguments, Branham was sentenced to six years on each of the five Class 1 felony offenses to be served consecutively. He must serve 85 percent of 30 years and since he has a history of being employed was ordered to repay taxpayers for his incarceration.

Branham was given credit for time served since his August 2020 arrest on the five Class 1 felony counts of criminal sexual assault – one charge was by force and the other four are for a family member under the age of 18.
