MARION COUNTY, IL — A two-vehicle crash Monday night east of Salem sent multiple people to the hospital with two of them being airlifted from the scene.

According to Illinois State Police, around 6 p.m. Monday, 42-year-old Shannon Lewis of Flora was traveling eastbound on U.S. 50 near Bannister Road when for an unknown reason her SUV crossed the centerline and struck a westbound pickup truck driven by 54-year-old Jesse Wooden of Alma.

Lewis and a 55-year-old passenger in the Wooden vehicle, Tammy Wallace of Kinmundy, were airlifted from the scene to a regional hospital with serious injuries.

A two-year-old male from Alma in the Wooden vehicle was transported to an area hospital with injuries, while Wooden refused medical attention.

Lewis was cited for improper lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Iuka firefighters responded to the scene and extricated one person who was pinned under the dashboard.

Firefighters and United Medical Response coordinated the landing of one medical helicopter on U.S. 50 and another in a nearby field.
