SALEM, IL — Heavy rains Friday night and Saturday morning resulted two drivers having to be rescued from their vehicles after they drove into deep water across area roadways.

Marion County Sheriff’s deputies and Salem firefighters responded just before 1:30 Saturday afternoon to South College Street Extension just south of Post Oak Road where a 47-year-old Mt. Vernon man became stranded in floodwaters. Firefighters donned safety gear and were able to walk out to the vehicle and assist the man to dry land. Water at that location was estimated to have been four-feet deep at that time.

Then around 8:15 Saturday night, sheriff’s deputies responded to Brewery Hill Road below Raccoon Lake Dam where they gave a male driver a ride home after his vehicle became stranded in floodwaters.
