Georgia man killed in I-57 crash near Kinmundy

KINMUNDY, IL — A 50-year-old Georgia man was killed in a traffic crash around 7 p.m. Monday night on northbound Interstate 57 just south of Kinmundy. According to Illinois State Police, Freddy Vasquez was approximately one mile south of the Kinmundy exit when the van he was driving left the road to the right, then re-entered the roadway and crossed both lanes before running off the left side of the road, going down an embankment and striking several trees before rolling onto the driver’s side.

Vasquez was the only occupant of the van and the Marion County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene.

The coroner’s office says Vasquez was killed instantly and alcohol is clearly the primary contributing cause.
