CENTRALIA, IL — A Centralia police officer was injured Monday as he was pursuing a suspect on foot across the Fairview Shopping Center on the city’s west side.

The officer initially thought he may have broken his leg as he radioed for help but he quickly assessed the injury wasn’t so severe. He was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital where it was determined he had sprained an ankle. The officer was treated and released and is expected to return to work by the end of the week. The officer sprained his ankle while running after 18-year-old Dewayne Johnson-Emory, of Centralia, who was suspected of retail theft from the Walmart Super Center. As Johnson-Emory jumped over a ditch, the officer attempted to follow and was injured.

Johnson-Emory was wanted on a no bond warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections and was taken to the Clinton County Jail.
